JPG, PNG or WebP?

JPEG is the universal photo format: every device, every app, every government upload form accepts it. It is lossy, so each re-save costs a little quality. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it right for screenshots, logos and diagrams and wrong for photographs, where files balloon. WebP does both jobs — lossy or lossless, with transparency — at smaller sizes than either, and is supported by all modern browsers and phones. The only reason to avoid it is an old tool that does not recognise it.

Common conversions

  • PNG → WebP: same picture, typically 25–50% smaller. Good for websites.
  • WebP → JPG: for forms, printers and apps that reject WebP.
  • WebP → PNG: to keep transparency in a format old software understands.
  • JPG → PNG: rarely useful; it does not recover quality and makes the file larger.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert HEIC to JPG here?

Not in the browser — HEIC is not decodable by web browsers. On an iPhone, open the photo, tap Share → Save to Files, and iOS exports a JPEG; or set Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible so new photos are JPEG. The TuckVault app can also convert on the phone.

Which format should I pick?

JPEG for photos that need to work absolutely everywhere. WebP for photos on the web (smaller than JPEG at the same quality, supported by all current browsers). PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency or sharp text.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are flattened onto the background colour you choose — white by default.

Is the file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with the canvas API. Nothing leaves your device.
