Hidden Album vs Photo Vault App: Which Actually Protects Your Photos?
The built-in Hidden Album and Locked Folder hide photos from view. A vault app moves them out of the library and locks them. Who can open each, on iPhone and Android.
“Hidden” sounds like “safe”, which is why most people stop at the built-in option. The two words describe different things. This guide spells out who can open a hidden photo and who can open a vaulted one, so you can decide which photos deserve which.
What “hidden” does
On iPhone, hiding a photo sets a flag that keeps it out of the main grid, search, Memories and widgets, and (since iOS 16) puts a Face ID prompt on the Hidden album. The photo is otherwise unchanged: it is still a JPEG or HEIC file in your library, it still syncs to iCloud Photos, and it still appears when the phone is connected to a Mac.
On Android, Google Photos’ Locked Folder goes further — items leave the library and are excluded from backup by default — but the folder opens with the phone’s screen lock. Gallery-app hiding on Samsung and others is closer to the iPhone model: out of view, still ordinary files.
What “vault” does
A vault app copies the photo into its own storage, and a good one encrypts it there. Once you delete the original from the library and its bin, the only copy is the encrypted one. Opening it requires the vault’s own credential. The photo is no longer part of the library, so library features — sync, search, Memories, a Mac’s photo import — do not see it.
That is the whole difference: hiding changes where a photo shows up; a vault changes where it exists and who can open it.
Who can open what
| Hidden Album (iPhone) | Locked Folder (Android) | TuckVault vault | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You, with your face or fingerprint | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ — PIN or pattern only, by design |
| You, with your phone passcode | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Someone who knows your passcode | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Someone with your unlocked phone | ✓ (Face ID → passcode) | ✓ (screen lock) | ✗ |
| Your other devices via cloud sync | ✓ with iCloud Photos | Only if backup turned on | ✗ |
| A computer connected by cable | ✓ (plain image files) | Separate storage | ✗ (encrypted files) |
| You, after forgetting the vault lock | n/a | n/a | ✗ — keep it somewhere safe |
The last row is the honest cost of a vault: a lock nobody else can open is a lock the phone cannot reset for you either.
Which photos go where
Hidden Album / Locked Folder: memes you do not want in the grid, screenshots you are keeping for a week, the thirty frames of a sunset, photos of gifts before a birthday. Things that are merely clutter, where the risk of someone seeing them is embarrassment at most.
Vault: IDs and documents, medical images, intimate photos, screenshots of private conversations, anything to do with money, anything you would not want a partner, parent, child or coworker to find on an unlocked phone. Things where “someone saw it” has a real cost.
The two-minute routine for the vault
- Set a PIN or pattern that is not your phone passcode.
- Import the photos. They are encrypted as they enter.
- Delete the originals from the library, then empty Recently Deleted or Trash.
- Lock the vault before you hand the phone to anyone.
Step by step for each platform: iPhone · Android. Deciding whether to trust a particular vault app: Are photo vault apps safe?
Lock what's private. Clear what isn't.
TuckVault keeps your private photos, videos and documents behind a PIN or pattern with AES encryption on your device — and cleans up duplicates, large videos and messy contacts on the same phone. Free to download for iPhone and Android.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hidden album the same as a locked album?
No. Hidden means removed from the main view; the photos are ordinary files in your library. Locked, in the sense a vault app means it, is a separate container with its own credential and, in a good app, its own encryption.
Does the Hidden Album work on Android?
Android's closest equivalents are Google Photos' Locked Folder and the hide/private features in Samsung, Xiaomi and other gallery apps. Locked Folder actually takes photos out of the library; gallery hiding usually does not.
Can a vault app be worse than the Hidden Album?
Yes, if it hides without encrypting, shows heavy ads and collects data. Run the checks in our vault-safety guide before trusting one.
Can I use both?
That is the recommended setup: the Hidden Album or Locked Folder for harmless clutter, a vault for the few things that matter.
