How to Free Up Storage on iPhone Without Deleting the Photos You Love
A checklist for 'iPhone Storage Almost Full': what is actually taking the space, the settings that recover the most, and how to clear duplicates and big videos safely.
“iPhone Storage Almost Full” usually arrives at the worst moment — mid-video, mid-update, mid-holiday. The fast fix is deleting whatever is nearest. The right fix takes twenty minutes and does not cost you a single memory.
Step 1: See what is actually taking the space
Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The bar at the top breaks storage into Apps, Photos, Messages, Mail, System Data and so on; the list below ranks apps by size. On most phones, Photos is the largest block by a distance, and inside Photos it is videos first, then duplicate and similar photos, then screenshots.
Do not clear anything yet. Just note the biggest two or three segments; that is where the time goes.
Step 2: Empty Recently Deleted
Everything you have deleted in the last 30 days is still on the phone. Photos → Albums → Utilities → Recently Deleted → Select → Delete All. For many people this alone recovers several gigabytes. Do the same in Files (browse → Recently Deleted) if you use iCloud Drive.
Step 3: Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (if you use iCloud Photos)
Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos → Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution photos and videos stay in iCloud; the phone keeps small versions and fetches the full one when you open it. This is the single largest saving available to anyone with iCloud space, and it is reversible.
If you do not use iCloud Photos, skip this — it only works with sync on.
Step 4: Deal with the videos
Videos are the gigabytes. Three choices, from gentlest to most drastic:
- Compress the big ones. TuckVault’s video compressor lists videos largest-first and makes a 1080p copy that is typically a quarter of the size. Keep the original of anything you might want on a TV.
- Move them off the phone. AirDrop to a Mac, or let iCloud / Google Photos hold the full version.
- Delete the ones you will never watch. Screen recordings, the 12-minute school concert, the accidental pocket video.
Going forward: Settings → Camera → Record Video → 1080p at 30 fps. 4K at 60 fps is four times the size and rarely worth it.
Step 5: Clear duplicate and similar photos
iOS 16+ has a Duplicates album under Utilities that merges exact copies — use it. It does not catch bursts, re-shots and near-identical frames, which are most of the clutter. TuckVault’s duplicate photo cleaner groups those and lets you keep the best one. Full method in how to delete duplicate photos.
Then empty Recently Deleted again.
Step 6: Messages, Mail and apps
- Messages → Settings → Messages → Keep Messages → 1 Year. Old attachments go with old threads. Review Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages for the largest conversations first.
- Offload Unused Apps (Settings → App Store) removes apps you have not opened in a while but keeps their data.
- Streaming apps (podcasts, Spotify, Netflix) cache downloads; clear them inside each app.
Step 7: Lock what should not be in the library at all
A storage cleanup is the one time you look at every photo on the phone — including the ones that should not be one swipe away. Move IDs, documents, and private photos into TuckVault’s vault, delete the originals, and the library becomes something you can hand to a friend without a second thought.
The recurring routine
Once a month: Recently Deleted → duplicates → largest videos → Messages. Ten minutes, and the warning stops appearing. For Android, see the Android storage cleaner.
Lock what's private. Clear what isn't.
TuckVault keeps your private photos, videos and documents behind a PIN or pattern with AES encryption on your device — and cleans up duplicates, large videos and messy contacts on the same phone. Free to download for iPhone and Android.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my iPhone storage full when I've deleted everything?
Three usual reasons: Recently Deleted still holds the photos (30 days), System Data has grown, or Messages is keeping years of attachments. Empty Recently Deleted first, set Messages to keep 1 year, and restart the phone — System Data shrinks when iOS clears caches.
What is System Data and how do I clear it?
Caches, logs, Siri voices, and temporary files iOS manages itself. You cannot delete it directly. Restarting, clearing Safari's website data (Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data) and, in stubborn cases, backing up and restoring the phone are the known fixes.
Does deleting apps delete their data?
Deleting an app removes it and its data. Offloading (Settings → General → iPhone Storage → app → Offload App) removes the app but keeps its documents, so reinstalling restores it as it was.
Is iCloud Optimize Storage safe?
Yes, as long as you keep paying for enough iCloud space. Full-resolution photos live in iCloud; the phone keeps small versions and downloads the full one when you open it. If iCloud fills up, new photos stop uploading, so watch the iCloud bar too.
